“The very notion of networking is built around a simple but far-reaching principle: namely, that it is easier to get information and help from people who either know you or know someone who knows you than from people who have never heard of you.”
|
Unlike, recruiters and employers, you are encouraged to look at your networking contacts as individuals. These people are typically your friends or friends of your friends. Your relationship with them is the same whether they live next door or they live across the country.
Anyone you know that does not work for a recruiter or an employer is a networking contact. These include the people you know through church, your child's daycare, tennis club, your spouse, etc. While everyone can be classified as a contact, can you imagine how overwhelmed you would be if you maintained tabs on everyone you knew? If would be a huge encumbrance. Keep tabs on networking contacts who have already been part of your job search. You can always add more as your job search progresses.
Pool your contacts as networking contacts when they can't possibly be classified under any employer or recruiter. Your knowledge of your contacts in terms of their ability to employ people in your field is much more valuable than your social affiliation. Try to think of a networking classification as the classification of last resort and employers as the classification of first resort.
You can freely create as many networking categories as you would like. To create a new category, simply type it into the category drop down box. JobTabs will populate the drop down box with the closest matching category as you type. If the the category does not exist already, JobTabs will no longer populate the drop down with existing categories and instead create the new category for you.
You can move your contacts to different categories by editing the contact and either typing in an existing category or creating a new category altogether. Upon saving your changes, the contact will no longer be in his/her original category, but the newly assigned category.
